Choosing Kitchen Sinks

Choosing your kitchen sink is an important task. It can add to or take away from the overall effect of your kitchen’s design. Many people stick with stainless steel sinks because they are believed to be easier to care for, but don’t limit yourself! If properly cared for, porcelain will stay looking shiny and new for a long time as well.

In caring for porcelain kitchen sinks it is important to remember never to leave acidic fruits, vegetables, and other products on its surface. Even in modern, acid-resistant sinks highly acidic substances such as lemons, vinegar, and tomatoes will quickly dull the shiny gleam of a new sink.

Also keep in mind that porcelain kitchen sinks can chip. They don’t chip easily, but tossing in a heavy sauce pan from two feet away isn’t a good idea. Set heavier dishes and pans in the sink gently and you’ll never risk a chip.

In cleaning your porcelain kitchen sink, be careful to use non-abrasive cleansers, baking soda, or dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge or towel. Abrasive cleaners, sponges or steel wool will scratch and dull the enamel surface. For an extra pep of shine, polish the surface with a soft cloth dipped in ammonia or vinegar.

Stainless steel kitchen sinks, though stainless still require proper care. You won’t have to worry about leaving lemons in the sink overnight or cranberry stains, but it can become dull and scratched.

In caring for stainless steel kitchen sinks it is best to put a plastic or rubber mat in the sink well to protect it from scratches. Inevitably, tableware, silverware and cookware will be dropped in the sink to await the next wash. A mat will protect the shiny surface and keep it looking new longer.

As with porcelain kitchen sinks, most stainless steel kitchen sinks require non-abrasive cleansers and sponges to keep the surface shiny and looking new. The exception being sinks with a brushed steel surface. These surfaces don’t show the delicate scratches from abrasive sponges and cleaning products. For a streak less shine, finish off with ammonia or glass cleaner.

Modern porcelain and stainless steel kitchen sinks are easy to clean and will stay looking newer for longer when cared for properly. If the design of your kitchen calls for a cream colored sink, get the sink! You’ll be glad you did.
